McGuire wins his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race in dominating fashion.
By Kyle Wainscott
Portsmouth, OH 8/30/08 Grayson Kentucky’s Josh McGuire picked up his biggest Dirt Late Model win of his career Saturday night at the Coleman family’s Portsmouth Raceway Park. McGuire would start the night off breaking his own track record in PRC Qualifying with a time of 14.244. McGuire would back that up in Hawk Brake Heat 1 coming from his fourth position start to take the lead after lap one. McGuire would cruse to an easy victory over Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader Earl Pearson Jr., Donnie Moran, and Terry Casey.
The “Wisconsin Wildman” Dan Schlieper was victorious in Hawk Brake Heat 2 winning over Jeep VanWormer, Bart Hartman, and Darren Miller. In Afco Racing Products Heat 3 Eddie Carrier Jr. looked to be the man to beat but on lap five Carrier would slow for a flat left rear tire. That handed the lead over to Mike Balzano who would hold onto the win bringing RJ Conley, Jackie Boggs, and Davey Johnson into the A-Main as well. Tiger Rear Ends Heat 4 got of to a rough start for several cars looking to make there way in to the big show as Joe Ramey, Nick Bocook, Josh Tidwell, and Jonathon Day were all involved in a lap one accident. On the restart Steve Shaver and Billy Drake would battle for the top spot until lap eight when Drake’s car slowed on the race track. Shaver would go on to win followed by Matt Miller, Brian Shirley, and Scott James.
Only six spots remained to be filled in the Glockner Toyota River Days Rumble 75. Mason Racin’ Rebel Shock Dyno B-Main #1 was up next where the top three finishers would transfer to the main event. Only one caution slowed the field and that came on lap seven when “The Hammer” Chris Conley spun his machine out in turn four. Justin Ratliff battled hard early to hold off Steve Casebolt but it would not be enough as Casebolt would get by Ratliff to take the win with Rattliff in second and Brad Neat in third. Eddie Carrier Jr. stole the show in Quarter Master B-Main #2 coming from the tail of the field to catch race leader Jimmy Owens on lap ten. Carrier and Owens made contact in turn one sending Owens to the tail of the field. Carrier got the win with Ben Adkins second, and Rod Conley third.
In the seventy five lap main event all eyes were on McGuire as he started on the outside of the front row with Steve Shaver on the pole. In row two it was Mike Balzano and Dan Schlieper, with Donnie Moran and Jeep VanWormer in row three. As the green flag flew twenty five Lucas Oil Late Models came to life with McGuire jumping out into the lead. After ten green flag laps McGuire had pulled out to a straightaway lead, and was encountering lapped traffic. On lap twelve a caution would fly for Justin Rattliff, who spun to a stop in turn four. Another caution would come on lap fifteen for fifth place Jeep VanWormer who was overheating and spun in turn four. On the restart it was McGuire with the lead, Dan Schlieper in second, Steve Shaver third, Donnie Moran fourth, and RJ Conley fifth. But the man on the move was the Quarter Master Rookie of the Year points leader Terry Casey who was blasting through the field, and moved into second on lap nineteen. As McGuire encountered lap traffic again Casey and Mcguire put on a show as they worked there way through the lapped cars. Casey would take the lead on lap twenty six with McGuire not far behind. With McGuire still in tow a caution would slow the field for RJ Conley who slowed to a stop in turn two. Thirty four laps were scored with Casey in the lead, McGuire, Moran, Schlieper, and Darren Miller fifth. On the restart McGuire pulled along side Casey who slowed on the front stretch causing he and McGuire to make contact with the caution waving for the slowing Casey. Caution would again wave on lap thirty seven for debris on the track with McGuire, Schlieper, Moran, Steve Casebolt, and Miller the top five. Moran and schlieper would run side by side for several laps as Moran finally took the second spot away on lap forty six. Pole sitter Steve Shavers night would come to an end on lap sixty one as his car slowed to a stop on the track. On the restart Casebolt showed his muscle as he and Moran battled hard for the second and third spots with McGuire now way out in front. Moran would win the battle over Casebolt to grab second on lap sixty eight. For the next seven laps all McGuire had to do was not make any mistakes, or have any bad luck and it was his. McGuire would go on to take his CJ Rayburn, GCP Engines, D.J.’s Kitchen Corner, Tri-State Flooring, and Budda Bert Transmissions, Pontiac GTO to victory lane to the delight of the huge crowd at PRP. Donnie Moran finished second, with Steve Casebolt, Dan Schlieper, and Darren Miller rounding out the top five.
